Sinuses are air-filled spaces in the bones of the skull, which surround the nasal cavity. They are covered with a mucous secretion, whose role is to keep the nostrils moisturized, and to retain the particles of bacteria and dirt. If the mucous membrane becomes think, the normal airflow is disabled and the secretion is retained, resulting in a sinus infection, commonly known as sinusitis.

Symptoms Of Sinus Infection

The most common symptoms of sinus infection are clogged nose and green mucus. Thus, you’re often forced to breathe through the mouth. Another common symptom is the annoying headache.

The most common symptoms of sinusitis include:

– Pain and pressure in the area around the sinuses
– Clogged nose
– Thick green mucus
– Headache
– Earache
– Increased body temperature
– Fatigue
– Reduced sense of smell and taste
– Unpleasant breath


Usually, people who suffer from acute sinusitis recover without any particular treatment. However, if the symptoms last for more than a week, or if you notice deterioration, it’s recommendable to immediately start with treatment.

Here we recommend you a few nasal rinse techniques, to thin the green mucus and unclog your nose.

Saline Rinse

For the preparation of this solution, you’ll need 1 cup of distilled, lukewarm water, 1/2 tsp. of baking soda, and 1/2 tsp. of sea salt. If you don’t have distilled water, you can always boil a cup of tap water. Pour the ingredients into a clean container and stir until they combine.

Tilt your head to the right side, over a sink, and use a syringe to gently spray the saline into your nostrils. During the process, breathe with your mouth open. If you’re doing this right, the saline should exit through your opposite nostril after a few seconds. Now, tilt your head to the left side and do the same with your right nostril.

You can repeat this procedure 4 times a day, for about a week. Then you should stop, or your nasal passages will become too dry.

Improved Saline Rinse

Prepare the same solution as previously described, and add some anti-inflammatory ingredients, to calm down the irritation. We suggest you try one of the following:

– Ghee – pure butterfat with anti-inflammatory properties. Add 1 tsp. to the saline and mix to combine.

– Warm milk – this is yet another option with soothing properties. Add 1 tsp. to the rinse and mix to combine.

– Glycerin – you can add 1 tsp. of this ingredient, to improve the smoothness and lubrication.

– Xylitol – a sugar alcohol, which is effective in eliminating Candida, and other bacteria. Add 1/4 tsp. to the saline and mix to combine.

Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

Apple cider vinegar has antiseptic properties, and it’s therefore helpful in the treatment of both, bacterial and viral sinus infection. Make a salt solution and add a few drops of ACV, to improve the effectiveness. Flush your nasal passages as usual.

Warm Milk Rinse

You can use warm, pasteurized milk to flush your nasal passages, especially when your nose is too dry and irritated. But, be careful and don’t use raw milk, as it usually contains bacteria that can worsen the sinus infection.

Goldenseal Rinse

Goldenseal has antimicrobial and astringent properties, which can help reduce the sinus infection and reduce nose bleeding. Mix 1 tsp. of goldenseal powder and 1 cup of distilled, lukewarm water. Flush your nostrils as usual.
