Here’s How You Can Treat Your Asthma With Garlic
The World Health Organization estimates that there are over 200 million people living with asthma worldwide, and that this number increases daily. Due to this condition, the airways become sensitive and they swell, thus restricting the free flow of air into the lungs. As a result, an asthma patient has bouts of coughing, shortness of breath and wheezing.
There is no cure for this disease, but there are a lot of medications and remedies that effectively help manage the symptoms. If not managed properly, asthma can lead to other respiratory complications and could even be fatal.
Garlic is one of the natural remedies that can help you manage this disease, and has been employed in the treatment of respiratory problems for centuries.
How It Works
Garlic contains certain natural compounds, including allicin and vitamin C, which are key for neutralizing free radicals, which cause contraction of the airways in asthmatic patients.
Histamine is a chemical that causes inflammation in asthmatic patients. The vitamin C in garlic helps break down this compound, and it reduces its release in the body.
Garlic also encourages the human body to create prostacyclins, which are lipid molecules that assist in keeping the airways open. Therefore, it enables better breathing in asthmatic patients.
How To Use Garlic For Asthma Treatment
Garlic has a strong, heated and pungent taste. Thus, not many people can chew it raw. However, you can mix it with other ingredients, to make it more palatable and effective at the same time.
1. Garlic Tea
To make garlic tea, crush about 4 cloves of garlic and mix them into 2 cups of water.
Heat the mixture in a saucepan, until about half of it evaporates. You can add half a teaspoon of honey and a little bit of lemon juice, to improve the taste of the tea. Drink while lukewarm.
2. Garlic Milk
To prepare garlic milk, crash about 8 cloves of garlic. Add the crushed garlic into a quarter cup of milk, and bring the mixture to a boil, while stirring constantly. Use a strain to get rid of the garlic particles, and allow the milk to cool down. Drink the milk while warm. For best results, consume this once or twice a day.
3. Garlic, Horseradish & Honey
For this mixture, you need to combine 7 tablespoons of crushed garlic with 7 tablespoons of grated horseradish. Then, add 2 and a half cups of honey and stir, to get a consistent mixture. Heat the resulting mixture on a low fire, until the honey dissolves to a point where it can be easily stirred. Then, turn off the heat, cover the mixture tightly, and store it in a dark cool place.
Ingest one tablespoon of the mixture one hour before every meal. For best results, use this remedy for several months, taking one month break in between, so as to compare the effectiveness of the treatment on your asthma.
Before trying any of the aforementioned remedies, make sure that you have no allergy to any of the ingredients. It is also important to let your doctor know that you’re on any of these remedies, so that they can also monitor the effectiveness. This way, they’ll be able to establish the best course of pharmaceutical and natural treatment for you.
