Muscle cramps are usually sudden spasms, or muscle contractions of the lower leg, and sometimes of your toes. They often occur immediately after we fall asleep or upon waking. They can be so painful that can bring tears to our eyes.

Why Muscle Spasms Appear On Our Toes

With the loss of water, the body loses electrolytes that we have to return. The necessary minerals are essential to our body these include sodium, potassium and magnesium that help our nerves to function properly. Dehydration causes a serious mineral balance disturbance that can lead to muscle spasms especially in your toes.

To prevent toe cramps you should drink plenty of water. If it’s required buy an electrolyte powder dissolve it in water and drink it, so you can balance the mineral levels in the body.

Tight Shoes

Some women and men wear shoes that are too small and tight for them. You may not notice when you take up a certain position but your feet and toes surly do. And, they don`t like it at all. Wearing unsubtle footwear can affect your blood circulation which can further cause your toes to spasm. In severe cases the constant rubbing can irritate the joints of the foot and that causes arthritis.

So make sure you wear a fit number of shoes and the proper type of footwear.

Side effects of certain medication

Taking certain drugs, such as antipsychotics, birth control pills, diuretics, steroids and statins can cause muscle spasms in your toes. If you notice that the muscle cramps started around the time when you took any type of the previously mention drugs, it may be a side effect of the medication. In this situation you should consult your doctor for changing your therapy due to this side effect.

If the toe spasms keep on, you should see your GP because toe cramps could be a warning sign for an underlying serious disease such as diabetes.
