Here’s Why You Should Start Taking Maca Powder
Maca powder is obtained from Maca, a plant that is indigenous to the Andes Mountains in Peru. The plant has been harvested as a vegetable crop for centuries and it is recommended for its medicinal value.
Maca powder is a combination of carbohydrates, minerals, and fibers and is packed with vitamins, essential amino acids, enzymes, and minerals.
Maca is rich in minerals and trace elements such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, potassium, iodine, silicon, iron, phosphorus, tin, Sulfur, silica, boron, and bismuth. It is also an incredible source of some multipart alkaloids, fatty acids, and sterols. Last but not least, it is a rich source of Vitamins C, E, B1 and B2. From the nutritional profile, it is clear that the nutritional value of Maca Root is significant.
Regulating hormonal imbalance
Maca root contains an ingredient known as Diindolylmethane (DIM), which is a phytochemical scientifically proven to be useful in improving hormone balance in both women and men. Maca works together with the endocrine system to help manage hormone levels, especially in menopausal women. The powder is also a natural source of certain nutrients necessary for hormonal balance.
Managing symptoms of menopause
A study conducted in the year 2006 revealed that maca reduces both psychological and physiological symptoms of perimenopause. These symptoms include night sweats, depression, anxiety, hot flashes, sleep disturbances, and heart palpitations. By toning down the hormonal processes, maca alleviates the discomfort experienced by many women during perimenopause.
Reduces prostate size
In men, maca is used for suppressing prostatic growth and ultimately reducing the size of the prostate. It is, therefore, great for treatment of BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia), a condition that affects many elder men.
Enhances sexual health
Maca root is instrumental in elevating libido in both men and women. Some studies have shown that maca powder naturally boosts sex drive.
Additionally, research conducted using rats to test the effectiveness of maca root on fertility and sexual health revealed that it led to increased sperm count in the male rats, and increased development of the egg follicle in the female rats. This indicates that it can be useful for enhancing fertility in both men and women.
Managing glucose levels
A study conducted in the year 2007 indicated that maca is instrumental in improving glucose tolerance and lowering glucose level in the blood.
Lowering blood pressure
A study revealed that maca can help in the prevention of ACE (angiotensin I-converting enzyme) which is a key factor in hypertension. This ultimately helps in lowering blood pressure especially in individuals living with Type 2 diabetes.
There isn’t adequate scientific data on determining the appropriate dosage for maca powder. It is, therefore, advisable that you follow the directions provided on the product label or consult your physician before consumption.
Maca extracts sometimes mimic estrogen and therefore if you have a condition that could be worsened by contact with estrogen then it’s advisable that you keep off maca extracts. Hormone-sensitive illnesses such as ovarian, breast, and uterine cancers, endometriosis, and uterine fibroids could be worsened by maca so if you suffer from any of them, consult a doctor before taking the powder.
