Why Iodine Is So Important To Our Body

On the other hand, the symptoms of the slow-acting thyroid gland or hypothyroidism are chronic fatigue, depression, obesity, increased cholesterol, chronic constipation, feeling cold all the time, dry skin and hair. Hypothyroidism is also the single most common cause of mental retardation in the world, but also one of the main causes of infertility, especially in women.

Pregnant women should not allow lack of iodine to reduce the chance of giving birth to children who will have difficulty with physical and brain development.

Iodine plays an important role in our organism and its deficiency can seriously harm our health. Iodine deficiency is linked to increased development of thyroid cancer as well as breast, prostate, and ovarian cancer. That deficiency prevents the immunity system to fight off bacteria, viruses, and fungus.

Iodine can be used for preventing diabetes, a number of eye diseases, stroke, and cardiovascular diseases.  Our bodies can’t produce this chemical and that why we should consume it thru water and food.

The prevention of iodine deficiency is very simple. Daily intake of iodine in sufficient amounts – 150 micrograms. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding the minimum daily intake of iodine should be 300 micrograms. Food with a higher amount of iodine such as fresh sea fish (sardines, salmon, cod, and sturgeon) and sea weed. In iodized salt, the percentage of iodine is not constant. That’s why you should always pay attention to the amount of iodine in salt. Good source of iodine is mineral water with naturally dissolved iodine because the organism can easier use the iodine from the water than from the food.
