According to a survey at the Brigham and Women’s hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, United States, women who drink paracetamol or ibuprofen twice a week, risk permanent loss of hearing. Doctors believe that this phenomenon is most probably caused by a decreased blood flow to the inner ear, and its damage from noise exposure.

According to Daily Mail, one in 20 women could blame these painkillers for the hearing loss.

The Link Between Hearing Loss And Painkillers (Paracetamol And Ibuprofen)

The results of the Daily Main study are consistent with another similar study, which involved men as well. Nearly one in 12 women in the US take acetaminophen at least twice a week. In a period of 6 years, this increases the risk of hearing loss by 9 percent. In the study, which was published in the Journal of Epidemiology, participated 55,850 women, between 44 and 49 years of age.

According to the results of this research, paracetamol and other similar drugs may reduce the blood supply to the inner ear.

In addition, these drugs can make the cochlea more defenseless to noise. Also, they can harm the hairs in our ears that serve as a protection and enable us to hear better. That’s why they can be the cause of hearing loss in both, younger and older women. Aspirin on the other hand, is not associated with hearing loss, if it’s taken in small doses.

However, more research is needed to confirm whether painkillers are the real cause of this hearing loss. Or, if other factors contribute to this as well.

Ibuprofen And Lung Cancer

Still, regular doses of ibuprofen can reduce the risk of lung cancer by 48 percent in smokers. A research at the Ohio State University shows that low-doses of ibuprofen, taken regularly, can inhibit the inflammatory processes that lead to the development of tumors in the lungs.
