1. Salt

Of course, the first ingredient on our list is salt. If you’re struggling with blood pressure, sodium chloride is a baddie. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the recommended daily dose of salt for individuals with high blood pressure is 1,500 mg. But, many people don’t follow this rule and eat twice the amount of recommendation. Health experts advise to pay special attention when it comes to foods with hidden salt in their content.

2. Sugar

It’s a general knowledge that sugar leads to obesity and weight gain. But, did you know that sugar can also increase the blood pressure? It’s quite simple actually. While sugar increases the chances of weight gain and obesity, the extra pounds you get increase the chances of high blood pressure. The American Heart Association recommends women to limit their sugar intake to 24 grams, or about 6 teaspoons per day. For men, this is 36 grams, or 9 teaspoons per day. The Trans fats in margarine are what makes this food unhealthy. Even though margarine is made of plant oils, their hydrogenation is what makes it an undesirable food for hypertension. Margarine is made in extremely high temperatures, and it’s injected with platinum, nickel and aluminium. These ingredients act as a catalyst, enabling a solid state. If you suffer from high blood pressure, try to avoid margarine and substitute it with some healthier alternatives.

4. Instant Noodles

Ramen noodles are a very popular food nowadays. They are easy to make and most people think that they are a healthy food. But, did you know that a serving of instant noodles contains about 1,580 mg of sodium and 14 grams of fat? This is higher than the recommendable daily dose. And all packed in just one meal!

5. Pickles

We can’t deny it! Pickles are extremely tasty! But, their sodium content is extremely high. For example, one medium sized pickle can have more than 700 mg of sodium. If you eat more than 2 pickles, you’re already reaching your sodium limit for the day.

6. Coffee

Indeed, coffee can increase your blood pressure levels. If you suffer from hypertension and you’re a regular coffee drinker, try to limit your intake to one cup per day, as coffee can momentarily spike your blood pressure levels. The same is valid for green tea and any other drink that contains caffeine.

7. Packaged Foods And Chicken Skin

Full-fat dairy products, butter, chicken skin and red meat should be consumed with precaution. As we have mentioned before, saturated and trans fats are bad for people with high blood pressure. Packaged foods have high amounts of trans fats, which can increase the levels of bad cholesterol and make your hypertension even worse. Thus, try to avoid them. Also, try to limit your intake of red meat and butter.

In the end, we want to point out that you should eat as many fruits and veggies as you can. Bananas, sweet potatoes, spinach, all sorts of nuts, etc. Also, you can incorporate herbs, such as oregano, sage, basil, rosemary, and turmeric as a substitute for salt.
