Towels play a key role in maintaining good hygiene. But sometimes, they do us more harm than good. Among the other things, they also collect feces and different types of germs from the bathroom, which easily spread in the warm, moist fibers.

When Do You Need To Change Your Bath Towel?

Experts warn that after every third showering/ bathing you should take a new towel. Researchers from the New York University add that this only applies if the towel is completely dry between each toweling.

However, it’s not yet known whether the accumulated microbes and germs are dangerous to the human health or not. But, for those who share a towel with their partner, or someone else, the risks are bigger. Namely, when we wipe with a shared towel after showering, our body encounters new microorganisms, to which it’s not accustomed. One of the biggest dangers, lurking from our bathroom towels, is the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause different diseases. From minor skin infections, to life-threatening diseases, such as meningitis, sepsis and pneumonia.

How To Maintain Clean Towels
  • Wash them after every third showering, or at least once a week.
  • Wash them on the highest possible heat.
  • Add bleach or any other product that kills bacteria during laundry.
  • Don’t forget to dry them completely.
  • Change them as soon as they begin to lose color or to smell moldy.
  • Never share your towel with other people, no matter how close you are with that person.
