Here’s how you can prepare the coconut milk kefir at home.

How To Make Kefir With Coconut Milk

For the preparation of this recipe, you’ll need the following ingredients:

  • One tablespoon of kefir grains
  • 250 ml of coconut milk (or coconut water)
  • A pinch of cinnamon (optional)

And

  • A large plastic or wooden spoon
  • Gauze
  • Rubber band
  • Plastic strainer
  • Cooking pot
  • Glass jar
Procedure

Pour the coconut milk in the cooking pot and warm it up to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, transfer it in a glass jar and add the kefir grains. Mix the ingredients with a wooden spoon (or plastic). Don’t use metal. Cover the jar with a gauze and tie it with the rubber band. We’re using gauze and not a lid to cover the jar, because the kefir needs to “breathe”. Store the mixture at room temperature, so that it can ferment. For the coconut milk, the temperature should be from 64 to 96 degrees Fahrenheit. If you’re using coconut water, the temperature should be from 75 to 118. The drink is ready in about 24 hours.

When the period of fermentation passes, shake the mixture a bit, and then strain it with the strainer. Et voilà, the probiotic drink is ready to drink. Add a little bit of cinnamon and enjoy!

Then, take the kefir grains, wash them and repeat the entire process. You should not stop this process, but you need to repeat it every day. The number of kefir grains will only grow. After a while, you’ll end up with a lot of grains, so you can give away some to your friends. Just be careful and avoid metal objects when preparing this drink, as the organic acid in kefir grains reacts upon contact with metal.

Coconut milk kefir has a different taste than the regular milk kefir. It’s not just sweet, but it’s also a lot less dense. When it comes to the coconut water kefir, you’ll get an ‘airy’ drink, which is even denser than the one made of coconut milk.
