Why Basil Is So Beneficial For Our Body

The beneficial and medicinal effects of basil have been known since ancient times, but in the past few years, this spicy plant is at the center of attention due to the high proportion of antioxidants. Antioxidants are very important for cardiovascular health because they protect the heart and blood vessels. They preventively affect the onset of various chronic diseases, have anti-cancer effects, and even actively fight aging.

Basil is extremely rich in antioxidants. It is considered as a cleaner of blood vessels: veins, and arteries. In addition to the high content of vitamin C, it controls bad cholesterol and prevents blood clots.

Also, this plant is called a natural antibiotic, because it is rich in vitamins A and C and beta carotene. Basil protects the body from damage caused by free radicals and it is a rich source of minerals, including calcium, potassium, manganese, and flavonoids.

Basil is usually eaten dried as a spice, and it almost invincible in the Mediterranean cuisine. Moreover, it is consumed as tea, although the fresh basil is the healthiest form.

Even, experts say that fresh leaves of basil work similarly to diclofenac tablets. Therefore, if you experience pain anywhere on your body you should take a couple of basil leaves and eat them or just make tea out of them.  In traditional medicine leaves of this plant are used as compresses for swollen and painful joints.

Due to the sedative effect, basil is not recommended for pregnant women that are at their beginning of pregnancy, or for babies younger than six months old.
