Caffeine is a natural stimulant that, in addition to coffee, is also found in tea, spicy drinks, chocolate, energy drinks, pills, and so on. While a cup of coffee can help you wake up and give you energy to start the day, too much of it can bring some serious consequences and be deadly.

Sometimes, the negative effects may take hours to manifest. Hence, health experts recommend that we should always be moderate and careful with the consumption of coffee.

Caffeine Overdose Symptoms
1. Addiction

An excessive consumption, over a prolonged period of time, can cause an addiction, with some pretty severe side effects. For example, consuming more than 400 grams of caffeine per day, for more than a few months in a row, is considered a lot!

If you’re a heavy coffee drinker, it’ll be difficult for you to go a few days in a row without it. It will distress your body and mind, potentially causing you stress, irritability, anxiety, headaches, troubles concentrating, digestive problems, change in appetite and fatigue. Try not to drink coffee for a few days, to see if you’ll experience any of these withdrawal symptoms.

2. Problems Breathing

Excessive caffeine consumption can increase the blood pressure levels and heart rate, and potentially cause shallow, rapid breathing. This difficulty in breathing can hamper the flow of oxygen to the brain, clouding your judgment and thinking.

3. Dizziness, Nausea

If you consume too much caffeine during the day, you’ll dehydrate your body, which in turn may lead to dizziness, nausea, and even mild seizures.

4. Digestive Problems

Since this compound stimulates the functioning of the digestive system, it may cause digestive problems, such as diarrhea.

5. Heart Palpitations

We mentioned earlier that high amounts of coffee elevate the heart rate, potentially leading to heart problems, irregular heartbeat and palpitations. There’s even the risk of a cardiac arrest, which can be deadly.

6. Insomnia

Do you have problems sleeping? Well, the cup of coffee you had before going to bed might be your problem! Caffeine has stimulating effects, which disrupt the normal sleeping patterns and cause insomnia. To help improve your quality of sleep, cut back on caffeinated drinks during the day.

7. Hormonal Imbalance

When we have too much caffeine in the body, the work of the adrenal glands is stimulated, producing more norepinephrine and epinephrine. With time, this can disrupt the work of the glands and weaken them. Also, there’s the risk of hormonal imbalance, by the increased secretion of estradiol and testosterone.

If your adolescent kids like to drink coffee, keep them on up to 100 mg of caffeine daily. Also, nursing mothers should be careful with the consumption, as infants may suffer from a caffeine overdose, ingesting it through the breast milk.

If you notice any of the aforementioned symptoms in your child, contact your doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment.
